It’s likely because they have a high level of something called “emotional intelligence” (EI).

This means they’re good at understanding and managing their emotions and also at dealing with other people’s feelings.

Now, how can you get better at this important skill?

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is about being smart with your emotions. It’s like having a set of skills that help you know what you’re feeling, control your emotions, and understand what others are going through.

There are five parts to emotional intelligence:

  1. Knowing Yourself: Understand your own feelings.
  2. Controlling Yourself: Manage your emotions, especially when things get tough.
  3. Staying Driven: Have goals and keep going, even when things are hard.
  4. Understanding Others: Get how others feel and show you care.
  5. Being Socially Savvy: Get along well with others and build good relationships.

Why Emotional Intelligence Is Important

  1. Better Friendships: When you’re good at emotional intelligence, you’re better at being a good friend. You understand how others feel, and you can talk through problems.
  2. Being a Good Leader: If you want to lead a group, like a sports team or a project at school, emotional intelligence helps a lot. You can understand your team members and help everyone work together.
  3. Making Good Choices: Being emotionally smart helps you make good decisions. Instead of letting feelings take over, you can think clearly, even when things are stressful.
  4. Handling Stress: When you’re good at emotional intelligence, you can handle stress better. You stay calm and make good choices, even when things are tough.

How to Get Better at Emotional Intelligence

  1. Think About Your Feelings: Spend some time thinking about how you feel. What makes you happy, angry, or sad? Understanding your own feelings is the first step.
  2. Listen to Others: When someone is talking to you, really listen. Pay attention to their words and how they feel. It helps you understand them better.
  3. Put Yourself in Their Shoes: Imagine how others feel. If your friend is upset, think about why and try to understand. It’s called empathy, and it makes you a great friend.
  4. Take Time to Relax: Sometimes, it helps to take a break and relax. Try deep breaths or simple exercises to calm down when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
  5. Learn About Feelings: Read books or talk to grown-ups about emotions. Understanding more about feelings helps you handle them better.
